How Does Your Child Talk?

Instructions: Read each statement for your child's age group and check "yes" or "no".

Birth
Y N - Makes pleasure sounds
 
0 - 3 Months
Y N - Repeats the same sounds alot (cooing, gooing)
Y N - Cries differently for different needs
Y N - Smiles when he/she sees you
 
4 - 6 Months
Y N - Babbling sounds more speech-like with many different sounds, including p, b and m
Y N - Tells you (by sound or gesture) when he/she wants you to do something
Y N - Makes gurgling when left alone and when playing with you
 
7 Months - 1 Year
Y N - Babbling has both long and short groups of sounds such as "tata upu bibibi"
Y N - Uses speech or non-crying sounds to get and keep attention
Y N - Imitates different speech sounds
Y N - Has 1 or 2 words ("bye-bye," "dada," "mama," "no") although they may not be clear
 
1 - 2 Years
Y N - Says more words every month
Y N - Uses some 1-2-word questions ("Where kitty?" "Go bye-bye?" "What's that")
Y N - Puts 2 words together ("more cookie," "no juice," "mommy book")
Y N - Uses many different consonant sounds at the beginning of words
 
2 - 3 Years
Y N - Has a word for almost eveything
Y N - Uses 2-3-word "sentences" to talk about and ask for things
Y N - Speech is understood by familiar listeners most of the time
Y N - Often asks for or directs attention to objects by naming them
 
3 - 4 Years
Y N - Talks about activities at school or at friends' homes
Y N - Usually talks easily without repeating syllables or words
Y N - People outside family usually understand child's speech
Y N - Uses alot of sentences that have 4 or more words
 
4 - 5 Years
Y N - Voice sounds clear like other children's
Y N - Uses sentences that give lots of details (e.g. "I like to read my books")
Y N - Tells stories that stick to topic
Y N - Communicates easily with other children and adults
Y N - Says most sounds correctly except a few, like l, s, r, v, z, j, ch, sh, th
Y N - Uses adult-like grammar
